The Building Support Aide is an important member of the educational team in the academic strand program. Typically, the Building Support Aide is found in buildings that have a cluster of two or three 6:1+A or 8:1+A academic classrooms. The primary responsibility of the Building Support Aide is to monitor students in the ALC room. This involves remaining with the student at ALL times, maintaining a log/anecdotal record of student behavior, and utilizing a checklist of prescribed steps that a student must follow to terminate their time in the ALC room. 2. Students are placed in the ALC room in one of two ways. The first way is teacher directed wherein the teacher initiates the student's removal from the classroom. The ALC aide assists the teacher in escorting a student from the classroom to the ALC room. It is also assumed that the classroom aide will assist in transporting a student to the ALC room, if necessary.
NOTE: In a crisis situation, the Building Support Aide and the classroom aide receive directions from the classroom teacher. The second method of placement is student directed, wherein a student requests to leave the classroom (for a calming down period). 3. When there are no students in the ALC room, the ALC aide spends quality time with the students within the classroom environment and should perform other general classroom aide duties. This time is very positive and may consist of private time with the students such as remediation and tutoring.
