The Network Technician provides technical and consultative leadership within the Wide Area Networking area of the WNYRIC, maintaining an expert understanding of the industry landscape and technology within. Acts as a technical representative helping to facilitate the development of solutions by and for WNYRIC/Erie 1 BOCES networking teams.
Job Responsibilities:
- You will help support the wired and wireless networks in multiple school districts.
- Local Travel, Driver’s License, and background check (Required) primarily Erie and Niagara Counties

- Effectively troubleshoots connectivity issues, ensuring the proper configuration of those connections, with assistance as necessary from Senior Network Technicians and Networking Supervisor while working toward independence with gained experience.
- Ensures physical installation and configuration of new network hardware.
- Assists in servicing malfunctioning network equipment.
- Remote and on-site problem-resolution skills.
- Assists in applying updates and performing maintenance on network equipment.

- College degree in technical or business, or equivalent industry experience
- Experience with virtualization and VoIP
- Network+, Microsoft Certifications, Cisco certifications highly desired (CCNA/CCNP CCDA, CCNP)
- Industry certifications from manufacturer/vendors such as Microsoft, Dell, IBM, HP, and Cisco.
Specific Duties (illustrative only, not all-inclusive):
1. Provides Wide Area Network (WAN) support, contributing to the development of engineering solutions that advance better, faster, and more effective systems and services at Erie 1 BOCES and its constituent districts.
2. Works flexibly and creatively as a member of the Network team with other technicians, network engineers (LAN and WAN) and application consultants.
3. Monitors, configures and tunes wired and wireless infrastructure for optimal performance.
4. Generates support desk problem calls as required. Follows-up on and completes all assigned calls.
5. Keeps abreast of new technology developments, and relevant industry trends within networking and serves as part of the WNYRIC’s subject matter experts in networking.
6. Identifies and assists in the development of new services within specialization area.
7. Participates in customer and prospective customer meetings to gain a full understanding of school district needs and expectations. Participates in needs assessments with customers and architects providing solutions to maximize efficiencies/benefits and limit costs/risks.
8. Assists in the installation, customization, and maintenance of approved vendor supplied hardware/software for LAN/WAN monitoring, operations and their related operating systems (Microsoft SQL, Active Directory, MAC OS, Linux, etc).
9. Assists in the training of network operators in the efficient use of communications hardware, network management tools, and LAN/WAN wired and wireless systems and technology.
10. Gathers technical requirements and assists in the development of service plans, analyses, designs and cost estimates.
11. Assists Engineers with regularly presenting information to customers in documents and presentations in cooperation with the WNYRIC Service Coordinator. Assists in the deliverer of customer-specific demonstrations, technical presentations and proof-of-concept pilot projects.
12. Assists in the development of documents and best practices for wired and wireless networking. Works with WNYRIC Service Desk and school district customers to implement best practices.
13. Acts as the technical liaison between the engineering team and the technical service teams. Ensures that the needs and requirements of the teams are represented to engineering and that the initiatives of the engineering team are communicated and coordinated with service teams.
14. Assists in the coordination of patches, version upgrades, server upgrades, storage allocations, etc, in conjunction with engineering and service teams. Participates in the resulting follow-up testing upgrades and change events.
15. Travels to building sites, holds and maintains a valid New York State driver’s license, and has a reliable vehicle to travel to assigned work locations.
16. Must be capable of lifting and racking networking equipment.
17. Completes and submits official forms, time sheets and billing reports, in a timely manner. Maintains daily logs of work performed.
18. Exhibits good oral and written communication skills, as well as proper meeting etiquette.
19. As a project team member, you will help ensure that projects are compliant with processes established by the engineering team.
20. Work with vendors and engineering team(s) assisting in the technical integration and implementation of goals and objectives related to the Western New York Regional Information Center's strategic initiatives.
21. Provide off-hour coverage as requested.
22. Other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor, director, and technology services team leaders.

- Job Qualifications
Minimum Civil Service Qualifications:
A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of experience in computer programming which included, at least, on (1) year of experience in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software; or;
B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two (2) or four (4) year college or university with an Associate’s degree in Data Processing, Computer Science, Business Administration or related field and four (4) years of data processing experience, two (2) years of which, included computer programming, and at least, one (1) year of experience in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software; or;
C) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six (6) years of data processing experience, two (2) years of which, included computer programming, and at least one (1) year of experience in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software; or;
D) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C).
Additional Qualifications:
- Proven experience with servers across various operating systems.
- Familiarity with database administration and application support.
- Knowledge of storage and networking concepts is a plus.
- Strong human relations skills to effectively interface with managers, staff, customers, and vendors at all levels.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Strong customer service and diagnostic skills.
