General Duties:

Erie 1 BOCES seeks Personal Teacher Aides for our Winchester Academy. Kind and caring individuals are encouraged to apply. These positions require working with students with disabilities one on one under the direction of the classroom teacher. Applicants should have a positive outlook, a strong work ethic and be compassionate.

  1. Assists with classroom activities as directed by the teacher.
  2. Works with individual children as directed by a teacher.
  3. Assists children with arrival and departure involving coats, boots, and lunches.
  4. Helps keep supplies and materials in order.
  5. Helps prepare materials for their use.
  6. Cleans up and puts away materials after use.
  7. Changes children's clothing and cleanses children, if necessary.
  8. Assists the teacher in implementing the classroom and/or individual student's behavior management program.
  9. Accompanies a child when removal from a classroom is necessary or when the child must go to another part of the building.
  10. Assists in restraining students who may exhibit behaviors that are injurious to self or others.
  11. Assists and supervises games and free play, both indoors and outdoors.
  12. Assists the teacher in the implementation of activities that include but are not limited to: feeding, toileting, and other activities of daily living(e.g. grooming, hygiene, leisure/recreation, etc.).
  13. Lifts and transports students in conjunction with daily living activities.
    1. Teacher Aides working with non-ambulatory students are expected to lift 40- pound loads independently and may be required to lift/move students weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance from another adult and/or with the use of appropriate lifting devices.
    2. SPECIAL NOTE: The ability to lift/move students either independently or with assistance is a condition of employment for teacher aides who work with non-ambulatory students. Initial and periodic physical examinations will test this ability. Teacher aides should not attempt to lift more than one-third of their body weight without assistance from another adult or appropriate lifting devices.
  14. Be an active part of the classroom education team, as demonstrated by following teacher directions, being cooperative, showing support for other team members and focusing on student needs and outcomes.
  15. Discuss parental requests for information with the teacher before responding.
  16. Maintains confidentiality of student information.
  17. Assists students in developing work skills and attitudes necessary to perform a specific job as prescribed by the teacher.
  18. Works along with students as needed to complete tasks and provide a positive work model until such a time as the student can perform task independently. 
  19. In consultation with the teacher, adapts when necessary and demonstrates efficient methods to perform individual job tasks. 
  20. Assists the teacher with an assessment of the student's ability to perform individual work tasks and breaks job tasks into separate teachable steps when necessary. 
  21. Coordinates with the student's teacher a schedule of "fading" assistance in order to maximize independence. 
  22. Demonstrates communication methods with students that will serve as a model for communicating with supervisors and co-workers; facilitates direct communication with people on the job site. 
  23. Monitors quantity and quality of work produced by students to ensure competency with regards to employer's and program's standards and assesses progress in skills development. 
  24. Represents Program in a positive manner and presents to employer and student an appropriate image to suit various job environments. 
  25. Participates in conferences, in-service training, and consultation with Teachers, and others as needed. 
  26. Performs other work duties as they relate to the position.

Job Qualifications

Minimum Civil Service Qualifications:

A) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; or;

B) Four (4) years of experience and knowledge in a particular field where specialized duties are involved, not necessarily in an aide role; or;

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
