The School Social Worker serves as a liaison between the home, school and community. Activity is directed toward those students who’s academic or behavior difficulties impair their learning. The school social worker is responsible for consulting with school personnel, acting as a referral source to and liaison with community agencies, and short term casework with parents and students.
Specific Duties: (Illustrative only; not all-inclusive)
Casework:
1. Works closely with the administrators, teachers, counselors, and other members of the home school staff in making provision for the optimal education of all home school students.
2. Supplements the information contained on each referral by reviewing the cumulative folder and health record of the student and by discussions with the writer of the referral. The social worker will observe the student in the classroom when advisable.
3. Collects pertinent and appropriate information on the student and his home environment.
4. Interprets the aims, objectives, and procedures of the school, and assist in establishing a close, cooperative relationship between the home and the school.
5. Interprets to the parents their responsibilities for the student's proper development and adjustment to school.
6. Assists the parents in locating factors interfering with the student's effective use of school.
7. Assists with family financial, health, or other problems which may be interfering with the best development of the student.
8. Increases the parents' understanding, their constructive and consistent participation, and recommends their use of appropriate community resources.
9. Maintains short term casework with the individual student to assist in the improvement of personal, social, or emotional maladjustment, and to develop an attitude of responsible self-direction in school and community life.
10. Maintains case conferences with school personnel to interpret home and community conditions in order that they may be more aware of the student's problems outside of the school, and to establish and plan for their respective roles in the modification of the pupil's behavior.
11. Completes a final written summary with recommendations upon the closing of each case.
Community Agencies:
1. Maintains familiarity with community agencies and recommend to the appropriate office children who should be referred there; then assist in making referrals and follow-up where advisable.
Other Duties:
1. Maintains a good working knowledge of law as it pertains to minors.
2. Assists in the reporting of suspected cases of abuse to Protective Services.
3. Provides short term therapeutic counseling or instruction to students whose behavior or emotional difficulties interfere with their school adjustment or progress. Advise teachers and parents with regard to the instruction or counseling given.
4. Prepares written and oral presentations as required.
5. Participates in the development of resources to the school districts and communities at large that includes teacher orientation, inservice training, parent meetings and professional conferences.
6. Prepare an annual report at the close of the school year.
