Job Responsibilities:
Primary assignments will be in Northern Erie, Orleans, and Niagara County districts.
- Designs, develops, supports and implements LAN's and their related operating systems.
- Directs the installation, customization, and maintenance of approved vendor supplied software for LAN operations.
- Generates and maintains LAN operating systems (e.g. Novell, MAC OS/X, DOS, Microsoft Windows etc.).
- Prepares charts, tables, and diagrams to assist in analyzing problems for LANS.
- Coordinate with the WNYRIC Senior WAN Specialist to maintain optimal network performance.
- Advises user training staff in preparing detailed training programs for LAN administrators.
- Coordinates the monitoring and adjustments of LAN systems for optimal performance.
- Organizes and prepares LAN system documentation.
- Assists in the training and instruction of users in LAN operating systems.
- Studies and evaluates new methods and procedures to determine the adaptability to LAN/WAN Technology.
- Coordinates the generation, customization and support of communications software connectivity (Percomm, TN3270 Enterprise Server, etc.).
- Prescribes the training of network operators in the efficient use of communications hardware, network management tools, and LAN/WAN Technology.
- Evaluates hardware and software and provides management with recommendations.
- Other duties may be assigned that are relevant to the civil service job description for this title.
Minimum Civil Service Qualifications:
There is no civil service examination required for this position for the duration of the NY HELPS Program. Candidates must meet the minimum civil service qualifications for a NY HELPS appointment as follows:
A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience in data processing which included at least one (1) year of experience in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software and, one (1) year of experience in the installation and maintenance of LAN operating systems; or;
B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two (2) or four (4) year college or university with an Associate's degree in Data Processing, Computer Science, Business Administration or related field and five (5) years of experience in data processing which included at least one (1) year of experience in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software, and one (1) year of experience in the installation and maintenance of LAN operating systems; or;
C) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and seven (7) years of experience in data processing, which includes at least one (1) year of experience in programming and/or maintenance of vendor supplied operating software, and one (1) year of experience in the installation and maintenance of LAN operating systems; or;
D) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C).
Additional Qualifications:
- Must be proficient with Windows Server 2012/2016 Server operation and management in a LAN/WAN environment
- MAC OSX, Linux, Wireless Networking, Network Architectures and other technologies a plus
- Familiarity with VMWare and SCCM are a plus
- Troubleshooting, research and documentation skills are also necessary for this position
- Candidate must also have good customer service and communication skills, along with project management and time management skills
- Must be able to present clear and concise information to administrators, managers, technology staff and end users
- Reliable transportation is required
