Position Title:  
Short Term Substitute Teacher, Automotive Technology

Hours:                       
7:25 AM -2:55 PM

Salary:                      
$140/day - Non-Certified (per diem)
$170/day - Certified, Short-Term (6-20 weeks)
$185/day - E1B Certified Retiree, Short-Term (7-20 weeks)

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily instruction, supervision, and support for students enrolled in an Automotive Technology program for 11th- and 12th-grade students.
  • Follow the established curriculum, lesson plans, and shop procedures to ensure continuity of learning during the instructor’s absence.
  • Monitor student progress through observation, participation, and informal assessments while maintaining a safe, organized, and productive shop environment.
  • Guide students through automotive tasks such as tool identification, basic maintenance procedures, safety protocols, and introductory mechanical diagnostics, based on the plans provided.
  • Maintain a classroom and shop atmosphere that supports students’ academic, technical, and social-emotional needs.
  • Reinforce safety expectations, proper equipment use, and professional workplace behaviors at all times.
  • Record daily attendance and complete any required reports related to student participation or shop activities.
  • Communicate with program staff, administrators, and support personnel as needed to ensure smooth class operation.
  • Provide supervision and direction during hands-on activities, ensuring adherence to safety standards and industry-aligned practices.
  • Collaborate with support staff when applicable and maintain positive, respectful interactions with students throughout the day.
  • Teaches career and technical skills and knowledge and employability skills to prepare students for the world of work or post-secondary education.
  • Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, in accordance with New York State Learning Standards, general elements of the course of study, as specified in state law, administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Participates in planning and developing goals, objectives, curricula, and reports.
  • Develops lesson plans and organizes class time so that preparation, instruction, shop work, and cleanup activities can be accomplished with the allotted time.
  • Demonstrates career and technical materials, equipment, tools, and processes using standard or teacher-prepared models, mock-ups, sketches, and other instructional aids.
  • Guides pupils in selection and performance of appropriate activities.
  • Provides individual and group instruction appropriate to the needs of the pupil(s) and the requirements of the activities being performed.
  • Instructs pupils in the appropriate safety precautions and the safe operation and use of tools, machinery, and equipment.
  • Assists in the control, storage, maintenance, and use of materials and property to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of classroom pupil conduct to provide an orderly, safe, and productive environment.
  • Collaborates with academic teachers to integrate academic coursework into career and technical curriculum.
  • Establishes contacts with the business community to maintain industry standards and provide students with internship opportunities.
  • Communicates with employers, parents, and school counselors on individual pupil progress as the need arises.
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve attitude and learning problems.
  • Provides encouragement for continuation of formal education and assistance to pupils in employment awareness skills through development and maintenance of student portfolios.
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom program related activities during the assigned working day.
  • Attends faculty meetings and works with Career and Technical Education Program Advisory Committee in the development and implementation of specific career and technical education programs.
  • May share in the sponsorship of student activities and club activities.
  • Coordinates work schedules and clinical sites with participating facilities where training is done, for example; hospitals.
  • Assesses each pupil's performance, knowledge, and skills and prepares progress reports and grades.
  • Maintains accurate and complete student records.
  • Researches and maintains bid specifications. Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, equipment, tools, materials, supplies, and parts as required, working under established budget and procedures.
Job Qualifications

Qualifications:          

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent  
  • Automotive repair or industry experience is preferred to support students effectively in a hands-on shop environment.

Candidates are not required to hold NYS Teacher Certification. Those possessing certification must submit a copy with this Application. 

State Education Department Regulations: Candidates that do not possess the NYS Certification will be limited to a maximum of 40 days of work.
