Job Responsibilities:
The Public Relations Specialist I will support school districts by developing and implementing pre-planned communications solutions to convey information in a variety of media that reach target audiences. The employee will also support Erie 1 BOCES district superintendent’s office by preparing information for public presentations and coordinating special events. While the work will be performed under direct supervision, there will be extensive opportunities to exercise sound independent judgment.
• Create and implement public relations plans that align with the organization’s strategic goals and brand identity.
• Complex, multi-layer, projects with some independent judgment will be assigned in well-defined areas of work.
• Crisis communication support will be required, including non-office-hours.
• Will review daily work of Public Relations Assistants.
• May serve as an organization’s main media contact to coordinate all incoming media inquiries and outbound media relations activities.
• Develop talking points, advertorials, content for web, social, video, newsletters, annual reports and other written materials as needed.
• Develop press releases, media alerts, pitches and additional media materials as needed; coordinate press conferences/media events.
• Maintain and grow relationships with members of the media; build and maintain media lists.
• Coordinate media training as needed with the organization’s spokespeople
• Prepare monthly media coverage reports and share with leadership.
• Serve as member of, or facilitate, committees or workgroups as needed.
• Collaborate with multimedia team members to drive the look, feel and population of all supportive communication materials.
• Proofread and edit communications with attention to brand alignment, content, grammar and health literacy to ensure consistency in organizational style and tone.
• Provide support to the division director as needed.
• Other duties may be assigned that are relevant to the civil service job description for this title.
Minimum Civil Service Qualifications:
Must meet minimum qualifications for a provisional appointment as follows:
A) Possession of a Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations or communications and four years of experience in a position with public relations responsibilities, one of which was in a supervisory capacity; or:
B) Completion of a minimum of 60 semester credit hours and six years of experience in a position with public relations responsibility, one of which was in a supervisory capacity; or:
C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
Additional Qualifications:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; initiative; critical thinking; creativity; deadline/goal oriented; ability to work with multiple staff and departments in communicating services; ability to plan and manage multiple projects simultaneously;
- Experience instituting supervisory practices and/or management of projects with vendors; ability to work and communicate with a diverse constituency; working knowledge of video scripting and social media content creation, as well as working knowledge of ADA accessibility standards and a keen commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion;
- Working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Canva Presentations;
- Physical condition commensurate with the needs of the position with or without accommodation.
