Job Responsibilities:
The Teaching Assistant provides direct instructional services to students under the general supervision of a certified teacher. A Teaching Assistant supports the teacher by helping to supervise activities in the classroom, working with students on an individual, small group, or whole class basis. Teaching Assistants may be assigned additional responsibilities such as teaching classes on their own, covering planned absences and allowing teachers time for meetings and conferences. They may also manage other support staff and assist with recording student grades, data and reporting on student progress. Duties of this job require a knowledge of child development and interpersonal skills to coordinate instruction with the primary teachers as well as communicate with parents.

1. Supporting students across the curriculum.
2. Works with individual students as directed by teacher.
3. Assists the teacher with marking and correction work.
4. Assists with school events, trips, and other activities.
5. Assists in classroom behavior management.
6. Assists with routine classroom functioning.
7. Accompanies students when removal from a classroom is necessary or when the students must go to another part of the building.
8. Assists and supervises group and individual activities in the classroom.
9. Assists teacher in the implementation of activities that are required in CTE classrooms and labs.
10. Maintains working knowledge and ability to implement classroom and school wide safety plans.
11. Maintain confidentiality of student information.
12. Assume teacher responsibilities in the absence of the classroom teacher or as assigned.

Job Responsibilities:
As an Itinerant Teaching Assistant, the position will be called upon to provide staffing support in a variety of Satellite locations at times when staff shortages are being experienced. The position will be based at Northtowns Academy and will perform duties at that site, unless called upon to assist in a Satellite location with staffing. Duties throughout the day could include, but are not limited to, assisting with classroom activities as directed by the teacher. Assist students with arrival and departure. Assist teacher in the implementation of activities related to curriculum and learning. Accompany students throughout the building. Assist with supervision during activities inside and outside the classroom setting. Teaching Assistants may be assigned additional responsibilities such as teaching classes on their own, covering planned absences and allowing teachers time for meetings and conferences. They may also manage other support staff and assist with recording student grades, data and reporting on student progress. Duties of this job require a knowledge of child development and interpersonal skills to coordinate instruction with the primary teachers as well as communicate with parents.

  8. Assists in restraining students who may exhibit behaviors that are injurious to self or others.
  9. Assists and supervises games and free play, both indoors and outdoors.
  10. Assists teacher in the implementation of activities that include but are not limited to: feeding, lifting, toileting, and other activities of daily living (e.g. grooming, hygiene, leisure/recreation, etc.).
  11. Lifts and transports students in conjunction with daily living activities.
    1. Teaching Assistants working with non-ambulatory students are expected to lift 40-pound loads independently and may be required to lift/move students weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance from another adult and/or with the use of appropriate lifting devices.
    2. SPECIAL NOTE: Ability to lift/move students either independently or with assistance is a condition of employment for teaching assistants who work with non-ambulatory students. Initial and periodic physical examinations will test this ability. Teaching Assistants should not attempt to lift more than one-third of their body weight without assistance from another adult or appropriate lifting devices.
  12. Maintains working knowledge and ability to implement classroom and school wide safety plans.
  13. Discuss parental requests for information with the teacher before responding.
  14. Maintain confidentiality of student information.
  15. Assume teacher responsibilities in the absence of the classroom teacher or as assigned.
