Job Responsibilities:

The School Social Worker serves as a liaison between the home, school and community. The school social worker is responsible for direct casework with parents and children, consulting with school personnel and for being referral source to and liaison with community agencies. Provides direct services based on IEP mandates. Responsible for progress reporting, development of IEP and goals, attends CSE meetings for students.

1. Works closely with administrators, teachers, counselors, and other personnel in making provisions for the optimal education for students.

2. Collect pertinent and appropriate information on the student and his/her home environment. The social worker will observe the student in the classroom when advisable.

3. Interpret the aims, objectives, and procedures of the program and assists in establishing a close cooperative relationship between the home and school.

4. Interprets to the parents their responsibilities for the student's proper development and adjustment to school.

5. Assists with family problems which may be interfering with the best development of the student.

6. Increases the parents' understanding, their constructive and consistent participation, and recommends their use of appropriate community resources.

7. Carries on case conferences with school personnel to interpret home and community conditions in order that they may be more aware of the student's problems outside of the school, and to establish and plan for their respective roles in the modifications of the pupil's behavior.

8. Becomes familiar with community agencies and recommends to the appropriate office students who should be referred there; then assists in making referrals and follow-ups where advisable.

9. Prepares written and oral presentations as required.

10. Carry on counseling with the individual child to assist in the improvement of personal, social, and emotional maladjustment and to develop an attitude of responsible self-direction in school and community life.

11. Make a final written summary with recommendations upon the closing of each case.

12. Investigate cases of extreme truancy.

13. Assist in the reporting of abuse and/or neglect to Child Protective Services.

14. Have a good working knowledge of law as it pertains to minors.

15. Other related duties as assigned by the Related Service Administrator.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the design, development, installation, implementation, support and/or maintenance of computer software applications, operating systems. Installs, customizes and maintains vendor supplied software or LAN/WAN operations
  • Generates incident tickets as required. Follows-up on and closes all assigned calls
  • Monitors, configures and tunes LANs or LAN applications for optimal performance. Organizes and prepares LAN documentation
  • Assists in the training and instruction of users in LAN operating systems and/or LAN applications
  • Performs troubleshooting for computer equipment use in the delivery of BOCES services
  • Installs, troubleshoots, supports and maintains communications software (used to connect to the enterprise server, dial-ups, et. al.). Provides related user training for such applications
  • Evaluates the network and makes recommendations to the Senior Microcomputer Technical Support Specialist and to the Supervisor, Microcomputer Technical Support Specialist
  • Acts as liaison between the WNYRIC and the customer (School District) regard to in networked hardware, software and application issues
  • Undertakes physical activities such as keyboarding, lifting, driving a motor vehicle, and tasks related to the installation, troubleshooting and support for computer devices
  • Works in schools where students (children), teachers and administrators are present
  • Travels to building sites, within assigned districts; holds and maintains a valid New York State driver’s license, and has a reliable vehicle to travel to assigned work locations
  • Completes and submits official forms, time sheets and billing reports, in a timely manner
  • Maintains communications with supervisors and team members (electronic mail, voice mail, etc.)
  • Familiar with setup and use of Active Directory, Netware (Novell), Windows, Ethernet, TCP/IP, electronic mail (Lotus Notes et al), PCs, MACs and other technologies, as required by specific assignment
  • Other duties may be assigned that are relevant to the civil service job description for this title
